How it works

The USGA recommends a two-step process. First, each player's Handicap Index is converted to a Course Handicap using the course's slope rating, course rating, and par:

Course Handicap = (Index × Slope ÷ 113) + (Course Rating − Par)

Then percentage weights are applied to each player's unrounded course handicap — sorted lowest to highest. Better players contribute more because their ball is selected more often. The total is rounded to a whole number only at the very end.

Team sizeUSGA default weights
2 players35% of lower + 15% of higher
3 players20% lowest + 15% middle + 10% highest
4 players20% lowest + 15% 2nd + 10% 3rd + 5% highest

Some tournaments adjust these percentages — use the weight fields in Step 2 to match your event's rules.
